In 2023, more than 1.9 million Americans were expected to be diagnosed with cancer – and early detection remains our best bet for treatment.5
LUNG CANCER
While smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, many people who do not smoke are diagnosed every year.5 Catching lung cancer early can increase the chances of getting rid of it. Annual screening with low-dose CT (LDCT) might be an option for people at higher risk.5 Lung cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women and the leading cause of cancer death.

The risk of lung cancer increases with age, partly because the disease grows for many years before symptoms develop.5

People at high risk include people who currently smoke or have quit in the past 15 years and meet other certain criteria, those who have a 20-year pack history, people exposed to cancer-causing substances in the workplace and people who have a personal or family history of lung cancer or who had previous radiation therapy to the chest.7
Certain people at higher risk may benefit from yearly LDCT screening and should talk to their doctor about the possible benefits, limits and harms of screening.8
